Romania - Yugoslavia 25-32

Yugoslavia won the group

By Karina Wulff Harrestrup
With a 32-25 win over Romania the Yugoslavians showed themselves worthy of winning Group A.

Their fans were also lined up in the venue once again and they cheered loudly for their team throughout the match.

In the first half the game was very even and both teams had good defences. All the way to 10-10 the Romanians kept up with the Yugoslavian team. Carmen Amariei was Romania’s best shooter with five out of the ten goals. 20 minutes into the first half Yugoslavia pulled away. They lead with 13-10 after the back Sanja Jovovic fought well for her team.

Yugoslavia was able to go to half time leading the game 16-13 after Petrovic demonstrated several good passes.

In the second half Yugoslavia pulled further away from Romania with to quick goals. After that it seemed very difficult for Romania to get back in the game. They made several fatal mistakes which the quick Yugoslavians were able to take advantage of. However, it wasn’t just fast breaks that gave Yugoslavia the lead. Tatjana Medved, back and playmaker, made some magnificent goals.

Yugoslavia kept the distance to Romania and when Dragica Djuric came onto the court it was very hard for the Romanians to score. Yugoslavia went from leading the game 24-21 to 29-23 because Djuric’s saves gave the team some good fast break goals. And in the end it was the fast break goals which made the victory as big as 32-25. The match definitely showed that Yugoslavia could be able to go far in the tournament.
