Creative Spanish thinking.
By Thomas Berndt and Marie Bjerre
The Spanish team put up a surprisingly strong fight against
Russia and Norway the favourites of Group C - the dynamite group.
In fact Spain robbed both teams of their victory.
Before tonight's matches all three teams have a chance of winning
Group C, but if the Spanish team loses tonight they are out of the
championship.
A +8 victory in the first match in Farum Arena may win the Group
for Spain but a -6 defeat may send them out.
Tonight the Spaniards face their first hurdle against the Germans.
Spain needs only one point to go to the main round while a defeat
will send them out.
If Spain receives a point the game continues even after the final
signal. Spain's placing in group C depends on the result of the
match between Russia and Norway.
A tie between Russia and Norway really calls out for creative Spanish
thinking. If the teams tie the match all three teams are left with
four points each which means that the group placing depends on the
score. However, if there is a winner Spain quite unexpectedly finish
second in Group C.
But that is not all. Spain might actually finish second without
having won one single match. In order for this to happen the Norway-Russia
match needs a winner while the Spain-Germany match must end in a
tie. If this happens the score will determine who comes in second.
