Topscorer vs. Topscorer

By Rudi Dalsgård

The last match in group A between Austria and Sweden was also a match between Swedish Åsa Eriksson and Austrian Ausra Fridrikas - the two players at Euro 2002 who have scored the most goals on their respective national teams.

Prior to Euro 2002 Åsa Eriksson had scored 940 goals on the Swedish national team in 221 matches. Fridrikas had scored 927 in 116 matches.

The top scorer title changed hands as a result of Sweden's weak matches at Euro 2002 and Fridrikas' passion for goals. Today Fridrikas scored nine goals which brought her total to 953 overtaking Eriksson by two goals.

Fridrikas will have at least three more matches in which she can increase her total whereas Åsa Eriksson must return to Sweden. So it may take quite a while before anyone reaches the same total as the hard-shooting Austrian left back.
